The Rope Grid Armchair gives a dining chair some of the comfort of a lounge chair without the bulk. Its back is an open lattice of thick natural cord, woven in a loose square grid between the back posts, so it gives slightly as you lean. The arm rails are wrapped in the same cord where your forearms rest.
The frame is solid hardwood in a dark walnut tone with slender legs that splay slightly, and the seat is a generous cushion in cognac leather-look upholstery with a soft rounded front edge. The color mix of dark wood, pale cord and cognac works in warm, low-lit rooms.
Construction. Solid wood frame with mortise-and-tenon joints, cord hand-woven onto the frame and knotted off out of sight, and a seat on a plywood base that unscrews for re-covering. The open back is easy to wipe and doesn't trap crumbs.
Where it works. Round tables in brewpub dining rooms, private tasting rooms and the slower end of a taproom where guests settle in for a flight.
Wood stain, cord tone and seat covering are made to order; an armless version can be built for tighter tables.
